• A Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) helps to identify and address potential privacy risks that may occur in a project and is used for information systems, administrative practices, and policy proposals that relate to the collection, use, or disclosure of personal or health information.

• The PIA process requires a thorough analysis of potential impacts to privacy and a consideration of reasonable mitigation measures to help manage associated risks. 

• Under Section 64 of Alberta’s Health Information Act (HIA), custodians must submit PIAs to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OPIC) before implementing, practices, or information on systems that will collect, use, or disclose health information. 

        Examples are:         

- Alberta Netcare 

                 - Enabling new technology (ex. virtual appointment, patient portal, or secure email)        

- Accessing diagnostic laboratories       

- Implementing an Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
